New Water Well in Gaza

Islamic Relief, represented by Dr. Mohammad Alsousi, Country Director, signed new agreement with Municipality of Gaza (MoG) represented by Eng. Rafiq Mekki Gaza Municipality Mayor and  Mr. Mohamed Al-Halabi – Director of International Cooperation, for digging new water well in Gaza City. The works of digging will last 8 months and the number of beneficiaries is about 8,000 individuals.

The targeted area is suffering from a severe shortage of water supply. Remal South is a new neighborhood with a high rate of extension and housing construction activity. Some districts of the neighborhood hardly receive water as the quantity available can not meet all the needs of the ever increasing population as in Shejaiya and Remal North.

The water quantity is extremely insufficient and supplied from a far well with low pressure, high salinity and interrupted distribution. Residents of the area are suffering every summer from a water crisis. This in turn has caused constant complaints by the local community for the provided municipal services.

The project aims at improving the water supply to the targeted areas in terms of quantity, pressure, duration and quality through constructing a water well with a capacity of 50-60 m³ / hour. Another objective of the project isdecreasing the dependency on the existing well in order to avoid penetration of the salty seawater into the aquifers. It is absolutely important for the concerned parties to decrease the digging of illegal private water wells by residents and the illegal household connections made by residents to the long water network lines between source and destination.
